2024 Honoree
Barbara Schlattman
As a resident of our community since 1973, Barbara has designed commercial and residential interiors for 48 years. Her projects have won local and national awards and have been featured in many publications including the Wall Street Journal. Barbara received the national honor of being named a fellow of the American Society of Interior Designers, winning first place in the nation for a design project.
Barbara’s community involvement all started with the Green Medians project – to landscape the proposed medians on FM 1960 – a 7 mile stretch. The project involved Barbara giving 150 speeches that raised over half a million, supervising construction, and working with 14 water districts to provide maintenance and water. The result was beautifully landscaped medians. In addition, she received numerous rewards, including the Mayor’s ‘Barbara Schlattman Day,’ Houston Woman Magazine – Gutsy Gal Award, and North Houston Association – Environmental Impact Award.
After retirement Barbara has served on numerous local boards. She is currently serving on the board of directors for Cypress Creek Foundation for the Arts and Community Enrichment (FACE), The Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts, the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce, The Shining Stars Guild, and the Cypress Creek Drainage Improvement District. Another passion is helping to develop a center for neurology patients and their caregivers at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.
In addition to her professional career, Barbara’s greatest joy is being married to Rusty for 53 years. Now that she is retired, her favorite things to do are helping people, improving her community, making things beautiful and having lunch with friends!
